What’s in your sex toy? Good question. You might not know that there are absolutely NO regulations about the materials that pleasure products can be made of. There is no truth in labeling when it comes to pleasure products either. In fact, products clearly designed for intimate use aren’t even labelled at all in most cases! This coupled with cultural shame regarding sex and sexuality and a mainstream adult industry that is primarily concerned about profits over people, has created a buyer-beware climate. In 2003, when The Smitten Kitten was founded and we first learned–the hard way–about toxic toys, nobody else in the entire industry was talking about this issue. In fact, we were threatened to keep quiet about it!
In 2005 we founded the Coalition Against Toxic Toys and in 2006 we decided that we needed proof about the dangerous chemicals that some of the most popular toys were made from. We sent a variety of sex toys from some of the largest manufacturers to an independent chemical testing lab in California and had them “deformulated.” That means, a chemist working in a laboratory reverse engineered the products and found out what they were made of! The results- shocking and an affront to the consumer public. The documents below are scanned images from the actual test results!
