Here’s an introduction to our lube education and research project, and what we’re trying to achieve.
We understand that many people are dissatisfied with their lubricant and struggle to find one to suit their needs. Finding a lubricant that works for you can make a positive difference in the quality of your sex life and well-being. This is especially true for folks with allergies or sensitivities, people who are taking antidepressants, or those experiencing hormonal changes resulting from menopause, pregnancy, hysterectomy, radiation, or chemotherapy. With all this in mind, we’ve created this helpful resource.
There is a need for accessible information about lubricant ingredients, their function, and what responses they illicit from the human body. (Especially the genitals!) Scientific studies on the actually application of lubricants to genitals are few and far between, and current regulation of lubricants is vague, outdated, and misleading at best.
The information about lubricants on this site illustrates chemical, biological, and anatomical concepts as they relate to lubricants, focusing on water-based lubricants. Water-based lubricants can seem like the simplest, or “most natural” choice, but they’re actually pretty complex and can contain potential irritants. As this is an ongoing research project we will continue to add and amend the information provided to include a broader range of lubricant types, along with the most up-to-date findings that we can provide.
With this information we hope to empower consumers and sexual health professionals to make more informed choices when using/recommending lube, and demand higher quality, more universally safe products.
Our lubricant recommendations are designed for people who struggle to find a lubricant that works for them, and reflect a selection of lubricants we feel confident will work for a wide variety of people.
It should be noted that we are neither scientists nor lawyers. We have compiled and interpreted this information and understand it to be true. More research is necessary when it comes to the application of personal lubricants and their ingredients to the human body. As with every area of science, things are sure to change as our knowledge base increases. We will strive to continue to provide updated and thorough information on this topic and revise our education materials as needed.
